Charged with Stunt Driving?

Stunt driving is illegal in Ontario. Even if you’re not racing another vehicle, you can still be charged with stunt driving for various dangerous driving behaviours. These include driving 50 kilometres per hour or more over the speed limit, participating in street racing, and even performing manoeuvres such as “squealing” your tires.

Stunt Driving Penalties

The consequences for stunt driving are immediate and harsh. Within recent years, stunt driving in Ontario has added new rules and additional penalties to crack down on the action. You can be liable for a fine of $2,000 to $10,000, to a term of imprisonment up six months in length, or both. Your vehicle may be impounded for 14 days at your own expense, and your driver’s licence may be immediately suspended for 30 days. Your licence will be suspended for far longer if you are found guilty. In general, the length of the suspension will depend on whether and how many times you have been convicted of stunt driving in the past:

  • First offence: Minimum licence suspension of 1 to 3 years
  • Second offence: Minimum licence suspension of 3 to 10 years
  • Third offence: Lifetime suspension (possibly reduced later)
  • Fourth offence: Lifetime suspension

Furthermore, a conviction for stunt driving often leads to skyrocketing insurance rates, with some companies refusing to provide coverage altogether. At Collett Read LLP, we are here to help you fight your stunt driving charge. Our primary goal is always to have the charges thrown out entirely. If that’s not possible, we will negotiate with the prosecution to reduce your punishment as much as possible. With our expertise and dedication, we will strive for the best outcome for you.
