Kersten Cowley

Paralegal

Kersten graduated from Brock University in 2021 with an honours BA in Political Science. During her education at Brock, Kersten came to find her passion in human rights, and focused her studies in this area. In her second year of her undergrad, Kersten was selected as 1 of 10 women out of a pool of over 200 applicants to experience an initiative called “Women in House at Brock” where she was able to shadow an MP in Parliament, and oversee the functions of the Supreme Court of Canada in Ottawa. This experience was focused on increasing female engagement and representation in law and politics and further enhanced her passion in this field. Kersten knew from a young age that she wanted to use her voice to empower others, and she takes pride in being able to provide a voice to those that may not be able to speak for themselves.

Following her University education, Kersten came back to her hometown of Hamilton where she began her Paralegal studies at Mohawk College. While at Mohawk, Kersten began working with a Canadian Charity “Jack.org” which focused on access to mental health resources, as well as providing empowerment to others to revolutionize mental health within their community. Kersten used her organization and interpersonal skills to succeed as the VP of External Operations, where she was responsible for event logistics and communicating with third parties to increase access to mental health resources for students at Mohawk. Kersten graduated from the Paralegal program with honours distinction.

Kersten began her legal career in civil litigation, but has now found her home in criminal law with Collett Read. Kersten is excited to hone in on her skills and passion to provide assistance and access to justice to those that need a voice.
