Joshua Perl

Articling Student

Joshua graduated summa cum laude from McMaster University in 2021, where he was a member of the distinguished Justice, Political Philosophy, and Law program. Joshua’s passion for law became evident through his experiences debating and writing on legal and philosophical issues, which solidified his desire to pursue a legal career.

Joshua earned his JD from the University of New Brunswick in April 2024, where he adeptly balanced rigorous academic studies with a variety of extracurricular activities. During his first year of law school, he competed as a varsity runner for the UNB Cross Country and Track & Field teams and became certified as an RCMP Restorative Justice Facilitator. In the summer after his first year, he served as Deputy Campaign Manager for Amarjot Sandhu’s successful reelection campaign in the Brampton West riding. He married his girlfriend of three years shortly after the election. During his second and third years of law school, Joshua served as the Director of Circles for the UNB Restorative Justice Society. In this role, he helped facilitate restorative justice circles in the Fredericton community.

In the summer of 2023, Joshua joined Collett Read as a 2L student, where his passion for criminal law was further reinforced through hands-on experience. In his third year of law school, he worked with the Fredericton Legal Advice Clinic, where he assisted clients in the areas of small claims, immigration, tenancy, social benefits, and employment law. Additionally, he worked as a research assistant for Professor Warchuk, focusing on issues in criminal and administrative law. That year, Joshua was honoured with the Christopher Hicks Scholarship for academic excellence and his strong interest in criminal law, as well as the Richard Hanson Prize in Constitutional Law. In the summer of 2024, he published his first paper, ‘Infanticide Provisions in a Contemporary Context: Should They Stay or Should They Go?’ in Manitoba’s Law Journal, Robson Crim volume 47 issue 5.

After completing his articles at Collett Read LLP, Joshua will clerk at the Federal Court under Justice Heneghan. Joshua is eager to practice criminal and immigration law in his hometown, Hamilton Ontario, after completing his clerkship.
